LISTER-V Lifestyle Interactions

Proprietary Amino Acid and Herbal Blend, Oral capsule

Caffeine-containing Foods/Beverages

· Severity: Moderate

· Notes for Consumers: Although an interaction is possible, these drugs can be used together. Side effects from Caffeine may get worse if you take Echinacea. Too much Caffeine can cause effects like nausea, nervousness, or sleeplessness. You may need to limit your Caffeine intake. Common foods and beverages containing caffeine include coffee, teas, colas and chocolate. Many non-prescription drugs and diet aids may also contain caffeine. Discuss any herbal supplements you take with your health care provider.

· Notes for Professionals: Echinacea may inhibit the metabolism of caffeine. Monitor patients for signs of increased caffeine serum concentrations if these drugs are coadministered until more data are available.

Food

· Severity: Moderate

· Notes for Consumers: Some Green Tea products contain caffeine. While taking Caffeine products, limit the use of foods, beverages, herbs and other medicines that contain additional caffeine, like coffee, teas, colas, chocolate and some diet pills. Grapefruit juice or grapefruit may also increase the effects of Caffeine. Too much Caffeine can cause effects like nausea, nervousness, or sleeplessness.

· Notes for Professionals: Charbroiled foods induce the hepatic CYP1A2 isoenzyme and thus increase the metabolism of caffeine and other methylxanthines.

Foods containing theobromine

· Severity: Moderate

· Notes for Consumers: Some Green Tea products contain caffeine or theobromide.

· Notes for Professionals: Certain foods that contain high amounts of theobromine, a methylxanthine, should be limited when consuming large amounts of green tea products that contain caffeine in order to limit additive methylxanthine effects, like nausea or tremors.

Foods High in Iron

· Severity: Moderate

· Notes for Consumers: Do not take Green Tea and Iron salts together at the same time. Teas have been shown to decrease the absorption of iron from your stomach. To limit this interaction, take Iron Salts (examples: Femiron, Feratab, Nephro-Fer, Slow FE) at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after Green Tea products.

· Notes for Professionals: Green tea has been shown to inhibit the absorption of nonheme iron. When possible, do not consume green tea or green tea extract within 1 hour before or 2 hours after giving iron salts.

Grapefruit juice

· Severity: Moderate

· Notes for Consumers: Some Green Tea products contain caffeine. Side effects from Caffeine may get worse if you take Grapefruit juice or other foods that contain significant amounts of Grapefruit. Too much Caffeine can cause effects like nausea, nervousness, or sleeplessness. Do not significantly alter your grapefruit juice intake while taking Green Tea products that contain caffeine.

· Notes for Professionals: Grapefruit juice contains an unknown compound that can inhibit cytochrome P-450 isozymes in the gut wall. Data are limited, and conflicting, as to whether grapefruit juice alters the serum concentrations and/or AUC of caffeine. Some, but not all, green tea products contain caffeine.

Proprietary Amino Acid and Herbal Blend, Oral capsule

Enteral Feedings

· Severity: Mild

· Notes for Consumers: If you need to use Enteral feedings (examples: Ensure, Jevity and others) as your sole nutritional dietary intake for long periods of time, you may be at risk for Zinc deficiency, as the feeding may impair the absorption of zinc. This interaction is not a concern if you simply use these products as supplements to a normal diet; true zinc deficiency is relatively rare. If you take Enteral Feedings as your only diet for long periods of time, you may need to discuss the use of additional mineral supplements with your prescriber. If you do take a Zinc supplement, it is best to take it at least 1 hour before or 1 hour after you have taken any feeding, meal, or beverage.

· Notes for Professionals: Absorption of zinc from enteral feedings may be impaired, despite the presence of zinc as a component of the enteral feeding formula; patients on chronic enteral feeding therapy may require additional zinc supplementation to ensure adequate nutritional intake.
