Benzoin tincture is an oral mucosal protectant indicated for the treatment of recurrent canker sores. It forms a protective coating over the mouth sore. Benzoin is an oleoresin, a mixture of both resin and essential oils that is derived from secretions of trees called vegetable gums or balsams (Styraceae). The compound tincture of benzoin is composed of benzoin, styrax, balsam of Tolu, and aloe in an alcoholic vehicle.

Tincture
-Dry affected area.
-Saturate a cotton applicator with the medication.
-Apply the undiluted medication directly to the affected area(s).
Allergic contact dermatitis has been reported with benzoin tincture. Discontinue benzoin tincture if irritation, pain, or redness persists or worsens and/or if swelling, rash, or fever develops.
It may be prudent to advise patients with multiple or severe fragrance oil allergies to avoid benzoin tincture. Assess patients who have a known contact allergy to fragrances or essential oils, and consider testing them to benzoin tincture.
