• Interaction: Alcohol• Severity: Major• Notes for Consumers: Do not drink alcohol while taking this medication. Drinking alcohol may alter the effects of your medication. Serious side effects may occur. Contact your care team if you experience new or worsening side effects.• Notes for Professionals: Advise patients to avoid alcohol consumption while taking abacavir. Abacavir is metabolized via alcohol dehydrogenase. Alcohol decreases the elimination of abacavir causing an increase in overall exposure to abacavir. In a study involving HIV-infected men, coadministration of alcohol and abacavir resulted in a 41% increase in abacavir AUC and a 26% increase in abacavir half-life. In males, abacavir had no effect on the pharmacokinetic properties of alcohol; this interaction has not been studied in females. Abacavir has no effect on the pharmacokinetic properties of alcohol.
