DIPHENHYDRAMINE (dye fen HYE dra meen) treats the symptoms of allergies and allergic reactions. It works by blocking histamine, a substance released by the body during an allergic reaction. It may also be used to prevent and treat motion sickness or the symptoms of Parkinson disease. It belongs to a group of medications called antihistamines.

    Notes for Consumers: Do not drink alcohol while taking this medication. Drinking alcohol while taking this medication increases the risk for dangerously high lactic acid levels. Call emergency services right away if you experience muscle pain or cramps, stomach pain, trouble breathing, or general discomfort and fatigue.
    Notes for Professionals: Patients taking metformin should be advised to avoid alcohol use. Blood lactate concentrations and the lactate to pyruvate ratio are increased during excessive (acute or chronic) intake of alcohol with metformin.
