NICOTINE GUM (Generic for NICORETTE) Lifestyle Interactions

  • Nicotine Polacrilex 4mg, Chewing gum, medicated

    Interaction: Tobacco
    Severity: Major
Notes for Consumers: Some forms of this medication may have other interactions. Discuss the form you are taking with your care team. Smoking while taking some forms of this medication increases the risk for serious side effects. Contact your care team if you experience new or worsening side effects.
Notes for Professionals: Advise patients to avoid smoking or using tobacco products while taking a prescription nicotine inhaler or nasal spray. Smoking or using other tobacco products with a nicotine inhaler or nasal spray may increase the risk for nicotine toxicity and other cardiovascular adverse effects as patients may experience peak nicotine levels that are higher than those expected with smoking alone. Nicotine replacement therapies that are available over the counter (OTC) carry minimal risk for additive adverse effects. Additionally, several strategies that combine OTC nicotine replacement therapies with smoking have demonstrated improved success in achieving continuous abstinence.
  • Nicotine Polacrilex 4mg, Chewing gum, medicated

    Interaction: Acidic food
    Severity: Moderate
Notes for Consumers: Most forms of nicotine do not interact significantly with food. If you are using Nicotine Gum, however, you should not ingest acidic beverages like coffee or colas within 15 minutes of chewing the gum, in order to get the best effect of the Nicotine. Also, do not eat or drink while chewing the gum.
Notes for Professionals: It is advisable not to ingest acidic foods or beverages during or immediately before the use of nicotine gum, as the absorption of nicotine from nicotine polacrilex relies on mildly alkaline saliva.
