Apixaban 5mg, Oral tablet
• Interaction: Grapefruit juice• Severity: Major• Notes for Consumers: If you drink grapefruit juice and take apixaban, you may bleed or bruise more easily. Signs of bleeding include, but are not limited to, increased bruising, nosebleeds, bleeding gums, pinpoint red spots on your skin, blood or pinkish color to the urine, or black, tarry stools. Immediately report any of these symptoms to your health care provider. Your Apixaban dose will be reduced if you take these together.• Notes for Professionals: The exposure to apixaban and risk of bleeding may be significantly increased in patients who regularly consume grapefruit or grapefruit juice, a P-gp and strong CYP3A4 inhibitor. The manufacturer of apixaban recommends reducing the apixaban dose by 50% when combined with other P-gp/strong CYP3A4 inhibitors. If patients are already receiving 2.5 mg twice daily, avoid concomitant administration of P-gp/strong CYP3A4 inhibitors. No specific guidance is provided for grapefruit or grapefruit juice.
