HYDROXOCOBALAMIN (hye drox oh koe BAL a min) treats cyanide poisoning. It works by binding to cyanide so your body can remove it through the urine. It belongs to a group of medications called antidotes.

This medication is infused into a vein. It is given by your care team in a hospital or clinic setting.
Talk to your care team about the use of this medication in children. Special care may be needed.

Overdosage: If you think you have taken too much of this medicine contact a poison control center or emergency room at once.
NOTE: This medicine is only for you. Do not share this medicine with others.
Your condition will be monitored carefully while you are receiving this medication.
Because this medication is dark red, it may turn your skin or urine red. This is common and is not harmful. Your skin may stay red or dark for up to 2 weeks after treatment. Stay out of the sun while your skin is red. Your urine may stay red for up to 5 weeks.
You may also get a rash that looks like acne. It may start 7 to 28 days after treatment. The rash usually goes away on its own without treatment.
Side effects that you should report to your care team as soon as possible:
-Allergic reactions—skin rash, itching, hives, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat
-Increase in blood pressure
-Kidney injury—decrease in the amount of urine, swelling of the ankles, hands, or feet
Side effects that usually do not require medical attention (report these to your care team if they continue or are bothersome):
-Change in skin color
-Headache
-Nausea
-Pain, redness, or irritation at infusion site
-Red urine
-Skin rash
