CLOPIDOGREL (kloh PID oh grel) lowers the risk of heart attack, stroke, or blood clots. It works by preventing blood cells (platelets) from clumping together to form a clot. It belongs to a group of medications called antiplatelets.

    Notes for Consumers: Do not drink grapefruit juice or eat grapefruit while taking this medication. Grapefruit may alter the effects of your medication. Serious side effects may occur. Contact your care team right away if you experience new or worsening side effects or if you feel your medication is no longer working well.
    Notes for Professionals: Advise patients to avoid grapefruit and grapefruit juice during clopidogrel treatment. Grapefruit consumption may interfere with the conversion of clopidogrel to its active metabolite which may reduce clopidogrel efficacy. Grapefruit juice, administered as 200 mL 3 times per day, has been observed to reduce exposure to the active metabolite of clopidogrel by 84% and reduce clopidogrel's antiplatelet activity as measured by the VerifyNow P2Y12 assay.
