RIFAXIMIN (ri FAX i men) treats diarrhea caused by bacteria. It may also be used to treat irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) with diarrhea. It can be used to prevent hepatic encephalopathy, a condition where the liver does not clear toxins from the body. It works by killing or preventing the growth of bacteria in your intestines that make toxins. It belongs to a group of medications called antibiotics. It will not treat colds, the flu, or infections caused by viruses.

    Notes for Consumers: Do not drink grapefruit juice or eat grapefruit while taking this medication. Grapefruit may alter the effects of your medication. Serious side effects may occur. Contact your care team right away if you experience new or worsening side effects.
    Notes for Professionals: Advise patients to avoid grapefruit and grapefruit juice during rifaximin treatment due to the risk of increased rifaximin exposure and adverse reactions. Rifaximin is a P-gp substrate and grapefruit juice is a P-gp inhibitor. Coadministration with another P-gp inhibitor increased rifaximin overall exposure by 124-fold.
