    • DOXAZOSIN MESYLATE (Generic for CARDURA)

DOXAZOSIN (dox AY zoe sin) treats high blood pressure. It may also be used to treat symptoms of an enlarged prostate (benign prostatic hyperplasia). It works by relaxing blood vessels, which decreases the amount of work the heart has to do. It also relaxes the muscles in the prostate and bladder, which makes it easier to urinate. It belongs to a group of medications called alpha blockers.

DOXAZOSIN MESYLATE (Generic for CARDURA) Lifestyle Interactions

  • Doxazosin Mesylate 1mg, Oral tablet

    Interaction: Alcohol
    Severity: Major
Notes for Consumers: Do not drink alcohol while taking this medication. Drinking alcohol while taking this medication increases the risk for dangerously low blood pressure. Contact your care team right away if you experience dizziness, feeling faint or lightheaded, or blurry vision.
Notes for Professionals: Advise patients to avoid alcohol consumption while taking alpha-blockers. Concomitant use may increase the risk for hypotension.
  • Doxazosin Mesylate 1mg, Oral tablet

    Interaction: Grapefruit juice
    Severity: Moderate
Notes for Consumers: Although an interaction is possible, these drugs may be used together. Side effects of Doxazosin may get worse. If the blood pressure drops too low while taking these medications, you may become dizzy or feel faint. To limit this interaction, do not stand or sit up too quickly. Contact your prescriber if you have dizziness which does not go away.
Notes for Professionals: Monitor blood pressure and for signs of hypotension during coadministration. The plasma concentrations of doxazosin may be elevated when administered concurrently with grapefruit juice. Grapefruit juice is a strong CYP3A4 inhibitor; doxazosin is a CYP3A4 substrate. Coadministration of doxazosin with a moderate CYP3A4 inhibitor resulted in a 10% increase in mean AUC and an insignificant increase in mean Cmax and mean half-life of doxazosin. Although not studied in combination with doxazosin, strong CYP3A4 inhibitors may have a larger impact on doxazosin concentrations and therefore should be used with caution.
