ALFUZOSIN HCL ER (Generic for UROXATRAL) Lifestyle Interactions

Alfuzosin 10mg, Oral tablet, extended release

Food

· Severity: Moderate

· Notes for Consumers: Alfuzosin should be taken with food at the same time each day. Try to take Alfuzosin with the same meal each day. Selected foods might interact with Alfuzosin. Grapefruit juice may increase blood levels of Alfuzosin by reducing Alfuzosin metabolism in the body. Too much Alfuzosin in the blood can lower the blood pressure. If the blood pressure drops too low, you may become dizzy or feel faint. To limit this interaction, it is probably best not to greatly change your intake of grapefruit or grapefruit juice while taking Alfuzosin.

· Notes for Professionals: Alfuzosin extended-release tablets should be taken with food at the same time each day. Alfuzosin absolute bioavailability is 49 percent under fed conditions; under fasting conditions, the extent of absorption is 50 percent lower.

Alfuzosin 10mg, Oral tablet, extended release

Grapefruit juice

· Severity: Severe

· Notes for Consumers: Do not eat grapefruit or drink grapefruit juice while taking Alfuzosin. Grapefruit juice may increase blood concentrations of Alfuzosin by reducing Alfuzosin metabolism in the body. Too much Alfuzosin in the blood can lower the blood pressure.

· Notes for Professionals: Instruct patients not to consume grapefruit or grapefruit juice while taking alfuzosin. Grapefruit may increase alfuzosin exposure resulting in serious/life-threatening reactions, including hypotension. Alfuzosin is primarily metabolized by CYP3A4; grapefruit is a strong CYP3A4 inhibitor.
